Collaborative Approaches to Engineer Biology for Cancer Applications (U01 Clinical Trial Not Allowed)

This funding opportunity announcement (FOA) invites applications to develop and apply innovative synthetic biology approaches to address challenges across the spectrum of cancer research. Projects will be required to apply a technology, based on an engineered biological system, to an important and well-defined cancer research question. Collaborative transdisciplinary teams are expected with PIs representing expertise in cancer research, engineering, and other disciplines relevant to synthetic biology.

Synthetic Technologies for Advancement of Research and Therapeutics (START): Topic 016

Current developments in synthetic biology have offered tools to design or modify organisms that can be used for a specific function, allowing for natural biological systems to be tailored as machines that produce desired compounds. Further, synthetic biology has a broad application and can be used to synthesize biologically relevant compounds and therapeutics that are not easily and/or not cost-effectively produced in a traditional laboratory setting.

Synthetic Biology for Engineering Applications (R01 Clinical Trial Optional)

This Funding Opportunity Announcement (FOA) invites applications to conduct research to advance the understanding and application of synthetic biology for human health. It will support 1) the development of innovative tools and technologies in synthetic biology and 2) their application in biomedical research and human health. An integrative research plan based on collaborations of synthetic biologists with computational scientists, cell biologists, engineers, and/or physician scientists is strongly recommended.
